POC    EXPELS     BAP

THE PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) yesterday expelled the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) in an unprecedented move that would ship the battle to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Despite last minute appeal by BAP President Joey Lina, 33 NSA's voted to withdraw recognition of the BAP during the three- hour general assembly meeting at the Milky Way restaurant in Makati. The number was three more than the required 30 votes needed to expel an NSA. Two NSA's- cycling and baseball-opposed the expulsion while badminton abstained. Archery and triathlon failed to send representatives. BAP executive vice president Christian Tand said the BAP would continue to perform it's duties and responsibilities until the FIBA withdraws it's recognition. The tournament also serves as qualifying tournament for the Asian Championships in Qatar in September. The Philippine Basketball League (PBL) BEST Center, Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ahve already adopted board resolution for this purpose, added Aventajado. He warned that from now on nothing can prevent Cojuangco from expelling NSA's, whose officials he didn't like and creating new associations with his allies as leaders. Tan accused Cojuangco of reneging on his guarantee that the cage impasse will be settled amicably if Lina, a former Senator, was made president of the basketball body.

UAAP nixes PBA plan
to draft college stars

THE UNIVERSITIES athletic Association of the Philippines (UUAP) yesterday rejected the proposal of PBA commissioner Noli Eala to relax the draft rules for the country's top college players.

Felicitas Francisco, University of Sto. Thomas' junior board representative, told the Bullentin that the UAAP has a strict rule as far as college players joining the PBA draft is concerned. She cited that several years ago, the UAAP suffered a major "disturbance" when then La Salle Star center Don Carlos Allado joined the PBA's rookie draft. This led the UAAP board to tighten the screw on it's players who wish to turn pro at an early age. Cardona is foregoing his final year in the UAAP in order to join the pro ranks this year. "Siyempre, hindi lang nmn ako ang makikinabang diyan sa proposal dahil yung ibang teammates ko kagaya, ni Mark (ISIP) at RJ (Rizada) eh makakapag-pa-draft din. Si Mac-Mac din baka puwede pang bumalik sa La Salle kung nagkataon," said Santos. But with the current ruling in the UAAP, Santos said he, along with Isip and Rizad, have decided to stay and play their final year with the Tamaraws, hoping they could give their alma mater with another UAAP championship before turning pro. Eala added be already contacted Edwin Lao, President of the NCAA and was told that a feedback will be given as soon as possible. Draft day is on August 14 but Eala said that the league is open to moving it on a later date if there's some hope with his proposal.

ROD NAZARIO, accused by Manny Pacquiao of conniving with US promoter Murad Muhammad in depriving him of additional income, yesterday lashed out at the famed prizefighter's remarks and said the boxer's own estimates of his prize money were greatly exaggerated.

I saw and heard in the news that I have been accused of getting $8.8 million (about P49.2 million)," said Nazario yesterday. "How could that be?" Who do you think he is? Mike Tyson? How can he earn such a big amount? nagsimula lang naman na siya ay talagang nakilala sa US ay when he won against Marco Antonio Barrera in late 2003." "There's no truth to that. Walang pera na ganyang kalaki sa bank Account ko," said Nazario.

Bogut, Tar Heels give draft a college favor

THE 2005 NBA draft will be remembered for firsts and lasts, four North Carolina Tar Heels and three tenacious point guards who called themselves the leaders of their new teams. While two high school players were selected in the top 10 of the final draft before the 19-year-old age limit takes effect, the NBA returned to the college court for stability last night. Milwaukee ended a minimum of suspense of taking Andrew bogut, the outspoken 7-foot center from Australia by way of the Universityof Utah, who became the first player from his country to be taken no.1 over all and the first college player to be chosen no.1 in five years. But the collegiate story of the night belonged to the Tar Heels, who had four players selected among the top 14 picks. North Carolina's chief rival, duke, was the last team to have four players chosen in the first round, in 1999.
